Sydney Opera House

Relec Switchboards was selected to provide a new main switchboard for the iconic Sydney Opera House at Bennelong Point in New South Wales.

The project to upgrade the main electrical infrastructure of the Sydney Opera House included the main switchboard and distribution board together with upgrades of electrical, mechanical, hydraulic and other services required to maintain the high standards of this extraordinary Sydney landmark.

The Scope of Work for Relec was to provide a switchboard to the requirements of the Sydney Opera House, at the same time meeting the latest electrical standards and incorporating modern protection devices.

The design of the switchboard was initiated early in the project to enable the integration of the equipment into what is a complex, existing structure with limited access. In order to satisfy these site requirements, Relec introduced its Modular System Switchboard, incorporating modular sections that kept weight and dimensions within manageable levels.

Considerable time was spent in the planning and design stage of the project and this resulted in a product incorporating leading edge technology and equipment specifically designed to meet the access and space constraints of this complex building.

The Sydney Opera House was able to maintain, without interruption, all its entertainment systems during the period of the upgrade and all of the building services were similarly maintained by addressing all access, coordination and safety issues.

On this project, Relec staff combined imagination and foresight with technical expertise to provide a first class product that can be described as the “heart” of this famous building on Sydney Harbour. Our staff are justly proud of their contribution to the continued maintenance of the Sydney Opera House.
