Our Story

Starting in the electrical trade as an apprentice at the age of just 16 with Standard Waygoods, Relec Switchboards founder Norman Emerson was a quick learner.

Over the next 24 years Norman built up a wealth of knowledge working with companies such B&S Electrical, Crompton Parkinson & Dengate & McKinstry.

In 1982 Norman opened his own business & in early 1983 changed the name to be Relec Pty Ltd & never looked back. From humble beginnings Relec operated from a shared premises in Aitchison St, St Leonards & quickly developed a reputation for service & quality.

Relec Switchboards relocated to its own premises in Reserve Rd Artarmon, then Leighton Place Hornsby, before moving into the current premises at 25 Salisbury Rd Asquith in 1994 & became Relec Switchboards.

Norman was actively involved in the industry & was a founding member of the Independent Electrical Switchboard Manufacturers Association (IESMA). Together Norman & his fellow members grew the association, leading the way for the development of what is now the National Electrical Switchboard Manufacturers Association (NESMA).

Norman has also volunteered on the EL6-8 Committee with Australian Standards to ensure that there was representation from the switchboard industry for a standard that impacted on the product they manufacture.

Maintaining high standards & being able to stand by the products manufactured at Relec Switchboards, Norman started compliance testing in 1985 at the Sydney County Council Testing Station, now known as the PlusES Lane Cove Testing Station.

Relec Switchboards today

Over the years Relec Switchboards has continued to grow & develop. Relec Switchboards has now transitioned into a second-generation family-owned Australian Business, currently run by Mathew Emerson.

Mathew started at Relec Switchboards in 1990 straight out of high school. Mathew started his apprenticeship in 1991 at Ultimo TAFE, followed by an Associate Diploma of Electrical Engineering.

Mathew worked on the factory floor throughout his apprenticeship learning about the equipment, brands and products. Mathew then progressed into drafting & design on Relec Switchboards first AutoCAD system. Mathew has also been an estimator & the production manager learning all aspects of the business along the way.

Maintaining the legacy of Norman Emerson, Relec Switchboards continues to develop, design & test switchboard systems of both modular & welded construction for indoor & outdoor use.

Relec Switchboards continues to test to AS:61439 & is always seeking to innovate & adapt new products into our Relec Vector™ modular switchboard system.
